Project Goal:
To identify habitat types and key habitat sites in the Maritime
Provinces that, if collectively managed for conservation along with
comparable sites elsewhere in the ecoregion, would help ensure the
long-term survival of all viable native terrestrial species and community
types found in the Northern Appalachian-Acadian Ecoregion.
Project Objectives:
To identify terrestrial habitat and
species conservation targets, and to set conservation goals for
each target.
To compile occurrence data on terrestrial
vegetation communities and species-level targets in the Maritimes,
and incorporate them into a central database supporting conservation
for the Northern Appalachian-Acadian Ecoregion.
To identify general geographic areas in the Maritimes portion of
the Northern Appalachian-Acadian Ecoregion, where those species
and habitat types occur and conservation goals may be met.
Project Activities:
Task
1: Confirm Ecoregion and Sub-unit Boundaries
Task
2: Identify Biodiversity Targets
Task
3: Identify Viability Criteria for Targets
Task
4: Gather Data and Information
Task
5: Map Sites with Targets Meeting the Criteria
Task
6: Assess Conservation Efficacy of Existing Protected Areas and
Management Actions
Task
7: Assess Viable Target Occurrences and Identify Priority Sites.
The
direct benefit of this project to wildlife habitat should be conservation
action by public and private sector organizations, acting on the
Blueprint and its compelling scientific rationale for conservation
at multiple geographic scales. In particular, the Nature Conservancy
of Canada (in Canada) and The Nature Conservancy (in the United
States) will use the Blueprint to guide their stewardship actions.
