Goals and Objectives
Bird Studies Canada's (BSC's) Marsh Monitoring Program (MMP) has effectively
monitored wetland dependent bird and amphibian (anuran) communities
throughout the Great Lakes basin for over a decade. More recently,
this monitoring work has also included the St. Lawrence basin. MMP
science staff have used data evolving from specific wetland habitat
assessment activities to determine habitat associations of marsh birds
and anurans to infer habitat quality and help guide wetland habitat
management efforts.
This
pilot project focuses on the Ontario Eastern Habitat Joint Venture
(OEHJV) program area and proposes to:
- Use BSC's existing MMP as an additional
tool to assess habitat quality and relative health of OEHJV sites
- Develop
proposed modifications to protocols and the sampling frame to
enhance MMP utility to the OEHJV
- Implement
these changes on a pilot basis.
All
of these activities will be done in collaboration with the OEHJV
partners.
Activities
- Utilize
existing MMP data to conduct preliminary post-hoc evaluations
of habitat quality and relative health of OEHJV priority sites
and regions
- Develop
and propose a monitoring and assessment framework and sampling
design customized for OEHJV evaluation purposes

OEHJV-specific MMP analysis and a detailed proposed OEHJV habitat
assessment framework and plan.
