ASSESSING WETLAND HABITATS OF INDICATED BREEDING PAIR SURVEY PLOTS IN NEW BRUNSWICK

Goals and Objectives

  • Quantify habitat by type within Indicated Breeding Pair Survey Plots (IBP).
  • Compare with surrounding habitats across provincial landscape and identify gaps in representation of IBP plots.
  • Refine population estimates based on waterfowl densities and distribution of wetland habitat.
  • Assess waterfowl population objectives in relation to this new information.
  • Assess the provincial Habitat Relationship Matrix in relation to this new information.

Activities

  • Using GIS, characterize the availability of breeding habitat on the IBP Plots in relation to wetland availability across NB.
  • Compare estimates with existing estimates.
  • Correct population estimates based on new data and set more accurate waterfowl population goals.
  • Correct provincial Habitat Relationship Matrix (HRM) estimates based on new data and to set more accurate waterfowl habitat relationships.

Benefits to Wildlife and Relevance to Habitat Planning, Decision Making and/or Management

  • More accurate population estimates will improve management for waterfowl.
  • Will provide more refined population objectives for the NB EHJV to develop habitat objectives in NB.
  • Will provide baseline data to monitor changes in wetland habitat in relation to population trends over time.
  • Will provide a more accurate HRM to se habitat objective for waterfowl population objectives in NB.
