Wetlands
are Ontario's most diverse and productive habitats. Known as marshes,
swamps, bogs and fens, wetlands are habitats for hundreds of plant
and animal species. People depend on wetlands too, for water quality,
flood control, economic products and recreation.
Private landowners are stewards of
most of Southern Ontario's remaining wetlands. The Ontario Wetland
Habitat Fund (OWHF) was created to provide financial assistance
and sound technical advice to landowners who conserve wetland habitats.
Since 1997, OWHF field staff have collaborated with more than 1100
landowners who are restoring, enhancing and protecting wetlands
through habitat projects.
The OWHF is a stewardship program
of the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture of the North American Waterfowl
Management Plan.
The OWHF is a partnership project
funded by WHC, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
