GRANT PROGRAM

In partnership with the Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada, a portion of the revenues associated with the sale of the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp are forwarded to Wildlife Habitat Canada (WHC) which in turn allocates funds toward wildlife habitat conservation programs across Canada. Most of these funds come from waterfowl hunters who purchase the stamp to validate their Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permits.

Acting through partnerships with landowners, communities, government, non-government organizations and industry, WHC seeks to identify habitat issues and find means for enhancing opportunities and developing practical solutions to problems facing wildlife habitats. Since 1985, WHC has provided grants of close to 33 million dollars to hundreds of habitat conservation projects across the full range of Canadian landscapes and seascapes, as well as all provinces and territories, through its granting program.

For WHC's funded projects, a template for the final fiscal year project report to WHC is available.

The majority of WHC's funded projects have focused on waterfowl habitats. This is a primary area of interest under the Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp program. For example, through the Joint Ventures of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP), WHC has supported several wetland conservation initiatives in Canada, such as the Ontario Wetland Habitat Fund.

WHC's investment in NAWMP initiatives, and other conservation endeavours (i.e. North American Bird Conservation Initiative projects), has helped to safeguard habitats for a number of wildlife species. And because this investment was made through conservation and stewardship projects, it has also helped to create lasting, positive, working relationships among those who manage our land and water ecosystems.
