THE LATE VICTOR ROLAND RECEIVES NATIONAL COUNTRYSIDE CANADA STEWARDSHIP AWARD

Seaforth, ON, October 19, 2006 The late Mr. Victor Roland, a well-known dairy farmer in Huron County, has been recognized for his lifelong commitment to land stewardship by being named a recipient of the 2006 Countryside Canada Stewardship Award. Countryside Canada is a national awards program that recognizes and promotes land stewardship and wildlife habitat conservation in the agriculture community.

"The Countryside Canada award has recognized the stewardship efforts of 66 individuals and organizations since 2000," said Lynn McIntyre, Director of Stewardship Programs at Wildlife Habitat Canada. "The award has raised the profile of agricultural stewardship across the country and has increased public awareness of the need to maintain wildlife habitat and biodiversity."

Victor Roland farmed for more than 40 years in southwestern Ontario. He strictly adhered to sustainable farming practices such as conservation tillage and responsible nutrient management. Mr. Roland also managed his woodlot sustainably and worked to improve wildlife habitat and groundwater quality.

Two months before he died in December 2005, Mr. Rowland was nominated for a Countryside Canada stewardship award. The award was presented to his wife, Margaret, at the annual general meeting of the Huron Federation of Agriculture.

"Mr. Roland was not only an outstanding steward of his own land-over the years, he spent hundreds of volunteer hours participating in initiatives throughout southwestern Ontario to encourage responsible land stewardship in the farm community," said McIntyre.
