The North Vancouver Outdoor School is being recognized for outstanding
contributions to forest stewardship and biodiversity conservation.
NVOS received the forest stewardship award for establishing the Dave
Marshall Salmon Reserve and ecological forest.

"For many years, NVOS has demonstrated
exceptional environmental leadership," says Lynn McIntyre,
Director of Stewardship Programs for Wildlife Habitat Canada. "The
Dave Marshall Salmon Reserve has greatly enhanced the educational
experience of thousands of students who attend NVOS. These young
people receive a unique experience with forest ecosystems - one
that will help to foster a new respect for our natural environment."
The 165-hectare Dave Marshall Salmon Reserve
is under a joint covenant with the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
This innovative educational centre hosts about 5,000 students each
year. Located on the Cheakamus River, it has enhanced spawning channels
for five species of wild salmon and also features three distinct
types of forests.
The Forest Stewardship Recognition Program
was established to recognize and promote exceptional stewardship
and conservation in Canada's forests. Since 1998, more than a hundred
individuals, companies and organizations have been honoured for
their stewardship efforts. Winners of the forest stewardship award
receive a limited edition print of a painting entitled New Morning
by BC artist Don Li-Leger.
The founding partners of the Forest Stewardship
Recognition Program are Wildlife Habitat Canada, the Ontario Ministry
of Natural Resources, the Canadian Forest Service and the Forest
Products Association of Canada.
