Conservation Conservation Grants

Conservation Grants

Since 1985, Wildlife Habitat Canada has provided over $60 million in grants to more than 1,500 habitat conservation projects across Canada.

The funds invested by Wildlife Habitat Canada to support grants come from the purchase of the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp. The stamp is purchased primarily by waterfowl hunters to validate their Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permits, and is also sold to print purchasers, stamp collectors, and individuals interested in contributing to the conservation, restoration and enhancement of wildlife habitat in Canada. With the support of the Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada, a portion of the revenues associated with the sale of the stamp is allocated to fund wildlife habitat conservation projects across Canada.

In recognition of the fact that the purchase of the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp by waterfowl hunters is the primary source of funding for the grant program, within the available budget, Wildlife Habitat Canada will primarily support:

  • Projects that address priority activities under the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP)
  • Regional and local habitat projects of importance to other migratory game birds
  • Newfoundland and Labrador Murre Conservation Fund projects

Wildlife Habitat Canada's competitive grant program includes:

  • Habitat Conservation Grants and Research Grants
  • Conservation Networking Grants (Wetland and/or Hunter Education)
  • Newfoundland and Labrador Murre Conservation Fund Grants

Grant Funding Applications are due on November 1 each year, for projects to be carried out in the next fiscal year.
Note: Wildlife Habitat Canada's fiscal year is April 1 to March 31.

Wildlife Habitat Canada’s Board of Directors reviews grant funding applications for the upcoming fiscal year during their January meeting. For those projects that have been approved to receive grant funding from Wildlife Habitat Canada, a grant agreement must be completed and signed. The grant agreement indicates the grant disbursement process, as well as the reporting requirements.
