bethany with paintingArtist Bethany Harris with her painting "Going Deeper"

The artwork for the 2011 Canadian Youth Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp was created in oil by Bethany Harris, age 18, from Millarville, Alberta.

Here is what Bethany says about her painting, entitled “Going Deeper”:

"Going Deeper" was painted from observing the moose that can be seen around the area of Millarville where I live. It's amazing how you have to take a really close look to see one, then it quickly disappears into its habitat. We not only have to go deeper to find them, and take the time to enjoy looking at them, but they too are having to find habitat elsewhere as the areas where they live become more developed - therefore going deeper was the feel I wanted to express in this painting.

For me, moose are fascinating animals - extremely agile considering their size. They are a beautiful sight to see, especially on a winter's day, when many larger animals are in hibernation. Their rich chocolate brown colours and precise markings and antlers make these animals very appealing.
