Distributed across Canada, from the Yukon Territory to Newfoundland, the moose (Alces alces) is the largest member of the deer family. Adult males are larger than the females and can weigh from 1,200 to 1,600 pounds (542 to 725 kg). Adult females weigh 800 to 1,300 pounds (364 to 591 kg). Only the males have antlers which are grown each summer and shed during the winter.
Moose eat a variety of foods thus relying on different habitats throughout the year. During the summer they feed on aquatic vegetation such as pond weeds and grasses, while in the winter they consume large quantities of willow, birch and aspen twigs.
